The inscription originates from an important sanctuary of Asclepius with the local epithet Limenos (Λιμηνός, possibly meaning „the god at the lake/marsh“) near the Aldomirovtsi Marsh to the northwest of the town of Slivnica. The statue base was probably connected with the foundation or a reconstruction of the sanctuary and supported the cult statue of the god.
The dedicant Aelius Docimus is a Roman citizen, with a Roman gentilicium and a Greek cognomen; his father Aelius Iulius is also a Roman citizen, but with a Roman cognomen (originally a gentilicium). The father could have been granted Roman citizenship under one of the emperors bearing the gentilicium Aelius, i.e. Hadrian (P. Aelius Hadrianus) or Antoninus Pius (T. Aelius Antoninus).
